I was watching Sky News this week and in particular their #morningstory feature. It featured a mum, pretty much the same age as me, talking about the difficulty she has encountered trying to juggle work and family (please scroll down to watch the video). This story really resonated with me. Not only is it very similar to my own, but those of the franchisees who join Lingotot. I was a successful languages teacher before founding Lingotot and I LOVED my job. However when my first daughter was born my priorities changed. I would have loved a part time teaching job, but they are so very rare and no one wants to hire a woman of childbearing years with the prospect of a maternity leave or two looming. Of course no one is allowed to say this out loud, but us 30-something professionals face this regularly. So I had to create my own perfect job and Lingotot was born mere weeks after my firstborn. I ADORE my role as franchisor and my favourite part of the job is helping women start their own Lingotot children's language franchise business and finally find that elusive work-life balance with a professional and flexible working. Would you like to join us? Our franchisees come from a diverse background including teachers, languages graduate, engineers and doctors. You can teach yourself or if you don't know any languages you can operate your franchise using tutors. Visit our website to find out more.
no one was going to hire a woman of childbearing years with a newborn....I mean gosh! she might get pregnant again! (and I did! Her name is Eleanor)
So I had to create my own perfect job and became a typical "mumpreneur". Initially I viewed Lingotot as a stop-gap until the children went to school, but was delighted (and continue to be delighted) that it has grown into something I love even more than being a languages teacher. And better still I get to help other women start their own Lingotot children's language franchise and achieve the holy grail of flexible, family-friendly working. And now my lovely Lingotot is a finalist in the national Mumpreneur Awards as well as the Women into the Network’s for the Best Small Business Award and Businesswoman of the Year title in the Living North Awards. Please keep your fingers and toes crossed for this accidental businesswoman! You can read more about Lingotot's Business Growth and the awards in the Evening Chronicle.
June, where I studied Spanish with Business and continued French during my final year. Where are your classes? My classes will be in South Tyneside and will include areas such as South Shields, the Boldons, Hebburn and Jarrow. What’s your favourite Lingotot song or story? My favourite song would probably have to be I am the Music Man. It is such a catchy tune and everyone already knows it, plus with the actions it gets everyone up and dancing along too!
We are very excited to announce new classes in Northumberland and Bristol which of course means welcoming new Lingotot tutors! This really interests us at Lingotot as we see many people joining us, either as tutors or as franchisees, who are fed up with the pressures of teaching and are looking for something more flexible, more fun with a lot less paperwork. According to The Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) union survey the top reason for leaving the profession was an overly-heavy workload. Almost 80% of teachers surveyed said they had considered leaving teaching because their workload was too high. When asked what would improve their work-life balance, suggestions included less work to do in evenings, less unnecessary paperwork, reduction of reporting demands and no more education changes in the curriculum. The tops five reasons for leaving the profession are listed below. We'd love to hear your views!
